Partition Notebook

The Partition Notebook is invoked by double clicking a partition letter in the Network Tree located on PerfectDisk’s Main Window (or right click a partition and select EDIT). The Partition Notebook is divided into three tabs: the Settings Tab, the Properties Tab, and the File Placement Tab.

Settings Tab

Partition Settings

The setting tab is used to store user configurable parameters used for Smart Placement and for offline defragmentation.

  1. SMART PlacementTM - These settings effect both immediate and scheduled defragmentation passes.
    1. Set the Rarely Modified Age.
    2. Set the Frequently Modified Age.
    3. Set the Fragmentation Threshold.
    4. Set the Defragment Only option. If defragment only is selected, this partition will only be defragmented whenever a defragmentation pass is executed. This will occur if the partition is defragmented from an immediate pass, or a scheduled profile. SMART PlacementTM technology will not be used to organize your partition.
    5. Set the Compress Small Files option (NTFS only). If selected, small files will be compressed prior to being saved to the disk. If the option is not selected PerfectDisk will not compress any files on the Partition, however files may still be compressed if the partition is set to always compress files, or if the file is already compressed. See your Operating System’s Disk Administrator for more details on compressed volumes.
  2. Offline Defragmentation File Type Selection - These selections are not available under Windows 95/98/Me as directories and system files are defragmented online. These selections will effect Offline Defragmentation passes. Schedule Profiles may override these settings. See Scheduling a Defragmentation Pass for details.
    1. Directories - if checked Directories will be defragmented and consolidated during Offline defragmentation passes. The box is grayed out for partitions where the directories can be defragmented online.
    2. System Files - if checked system files, such as the Master File Table, the metadata files, etc., will be defragmented during Offline defragmentation passes.
    3. Paging File - if checked the paging file (pagefile.sys) will be defragmented during Offline defragmentation passes. If the Pagefile is not resident on this partition checking this box will have no effect.
    4. Do Offline Defrag at Every Reboot - if checked, PerfectDisk will defragment the selected file types during every reboot. This option will be disabled until a offline file type is selected.

Properties Tab

Partition Settings

The Properties Tab is used to display the following fixed characteristics of your partition:

  1. Volume Name - Partition Name as set in Windows Disk Administrator.
  2. File System - FAT or NTFS.
  3. Serial Number - hard drive serial number.
  4. Bytes per sector - disk format information.
  5. Sectors per Cluster - disk format information.
  6. Total Clusters - displayed in number of clusters and MB.
  7. Free Clusters - displayed in number of clusters and MB. This includes free space both inside and outside the MFT reserved zone.
  8. Clusters in Use - displayed in number of clusters and MB.

File Placement Tab

Partition Settings

The File Placement Tab is used to modify the SMART PlacementTM employed by PerfectDisk.

At the top of this screen you can alter where you want the Rarely, Occasionally, and Frequently modified files placed. By default the zones are split with half of each type being placed at the beginning and end of the disk.

If you have the partition setup to Defragment Only (set on the first tab of the Partition Notebook), defrag only buttons are available to indicate where the files should be placed.
